... Because Everyone Can Build a Family

Unless you see it in practice, it is very hard to visualize the many factors that go into matching (or not matching) our Intended Parents as we navigate the ever-changing stream of surrogate candidates who appear to be viable for matching on any given day. In an effort to provide transparency, please find below an illustration of a “day in the life” of the matching process, profiling ten fictitious IPs who are “in line” for matching, and comparing their requirements to the traits of four newly identified GC candidates who are potential matches at a particular moment in time:

IPS “IN LINE” FOR MATCHING:
(In order of time elapsed on their search)

1. JOE & JIM – International, gay, married, Dual Embryo Transfer (DET), would terminate for Down Syndrome. Wants a GC on the east coast.

2. ANN – Domestic, straight, not partnered, Single Embryo Transfer (SET), egg donor, would terminate for Down Syndrome. Wants a GC within a six hour drive.

3. MARY & TOM – Domestic, straight, married, egg donor, SET, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

4. NICK & MIKE – Domestic, gay, married, SET, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

5. SUE & SAM – Domestic, straight, unmarried, egg donor, DET, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

6. SARA & MAX – Domestice, straight, married, DET, no donors, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

7. MARK – Domestic, not partnered, straight, SET, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

8. GEORGE & LUKE – International, gay, married, SET, would terminate for Down Syndrome.

9. DAN & SCOTT – Domestic, gay, married, DET, would NOT terminate for Down Syndrome.

10. LISA & STEVEN – Domestic, straight, married, SET, egg donor, would NOT terminate for Down Syndrome.

FOUR NEW GC CANDIDATES FOR MATCHING CONSIDERATION:

JANE – From Mississippi
Will match to Sara and Max, who are 6th “in line”

  • Open to working with any IPs
  • Defers on all termination issues
  • For legal reasons, CFC will only match a Mississippi GC to IPs who are not using an egg or sperm donor, which means she can only be matched to a straight couple using their own genetic embryos.
    Therefore:
  • Jane cannot be matched to any of the gay clients – this rules out Joe and Jim, Nick and Mike, Mark, George and Luke, and Dan and Scott.
  • Jane cannot be matched to any of the straight couples using an egg donor – this rules out Mary and Tom, Sue and Sam, Ann and John, and Lisa and Steven.

This leaves only SARA AND MAX as a potential match for Jane.

STACEY – From Georgia
Will match to Ann, who is 2nd “in line”

  • Only wants to be matched with a straight married couple or a single woman
  • Is only willing to do a Single Embryo Transfer
  • Defers on all termination issues
    Therefore:
  • Stacey cannot be matched to any of the gay clients because of her own preference – this rules out Joe and Jim, Nick and Mike, George and Luke, and Dan and Scott.
  • Stacey cannot be matched to the single man – this rules out Mark.
  • Stacey cannot be matched to any of the IPs who are planning a dual embryo transfer – this rules out Joe and Jim, Mary and Tom, Sue and Sam, Stacy and Max, and Dan and Scott.
  • Stacey cannot be matched to Lisa and Steven because she is more than a 6-hour drive from Washington, DC.

This leaves only ANN as a potential match for Stacey.

LAURA – From California
Will match to Dan and Scott, who are 9th “in line”

  • Only wants to be matched with gay IPs
  • Only wants to be matched to domestic IPs
  • Will not terminate for Down Syndrome
    Therefore:
  • Lauren cannot be matched to any of the straight clients because of her own preference. This rules out Mary and Tom, Sue and Sam, Stacey and Max, Ann and John, Lisa and Steven, and Mark.
  • Lauren cannot be matched to any of the international IPs. This rules out George and Jim and Joe and Luke.
  • Lauren cannot be matched to any of the IPs who require a GC who would be willing to defer to their decision on termination for Down Syndrome. This rules out Joe and Jim, Mary and Tom, Nick and Mike, Sue and Sam, Stacey and Max, Mark, George and Luke, and Ann and John.

This leaves only DAN AND SCOTT as a potential match for Laura.

GRACE – From North Carolina
Will match to Lisa and Steven, who are 10th “in line”

  • Only wants to be matched with a straight married couple
  • Is only willing to do a Single Embryo Transfer
  • Will not terminate for Down Syndrome
    Therefore:
  • Grace cannot be matched to any of the gay or single clients because of her own preference. This rules out Joe and Jim, Nick and Mike, George and Luke, Dan and Scott, and Mark.
  • Grace cannot be matched to any of the international IPs. This rules out George and Jim and Joe and Luke.
  • Grace cannot be matched to any of the IPs who require a GC who would be willing to defer to their decision on termination for Down Syndrome. This rules out Joe and Jim, Mary and Tom, Nick and Mike, Sue and Sam, Stacey and Max, Mark, George and Luke, and Ann and John.

This leaves only LISA AND STEVEN as a potential match for Grace.

Unfortunately, even though Joe and Jim have been waiting the longest, there is simply no way to make an ethical match to any of the four new GC candidates identified at this particular moment in time. On the other hand, Lisa and Steven, who have been waiting the shortest length of time, just happened to align with a new candidate who simply cannot be matched to any of the IPs waiting “ahead” of them in line.

Every day new candidates will be identified – one of whom will turn out to be the perfect match for Joe and Jim – or for any of the other IPs who are at various stages in their search. Always keep the faith; the fact is that even if you are the exception who takes longer than average, whether through especially restrictive preferences or sheer luck of the draw – we will ultimately find your perfect match.
